Sea Smoke was started in 1999 by Bob Davids, a fan of Burgundy and the CEO of a computer game company. Pinot Noir was first produced here in 2002, and Sea Smoke's offerings are among the most highly sought-after in California. The name Sea Smoke is an allusion to the evening fogs that flow in from the Pacific Ocean through the Santa Ynez River canyon, which falls between the Santa Rita and Santa Ynez mountains. The fog is a key factor in creating ideal conditions for the development of the high-quality Pinot Noir for which Sea Smoke is renowned. The fogs allow for perfectly balanced fruit by cooling the grapes and preserving their bright acidity after the long, sunny, warm days, which helps to drive the ripening and flavour development. Sea Smoke Pinots are precise, beautifully textured, elegant and nuanced expressions of the grape that are undeniably Californian, while also showing a refined eloquence and deference to the wines of Burgundy that so inspired Bob Davids.
